Perry Lederman was Joan's husband, who died one year before the first ocean sediment arrived in Joan's life. A friend bought Perry's guitar so Joan could buy the kiln which continues metamorphozing sea muds into glazes. Every kiln firing or opening is spent hearing this music.

Elijah Wald says: "Perry was one of the great fingerpickers of the 1960s, a friend and influence to artists including Bob Dylan, John Fahey, Michael Bloomfield, Jerry Garcia, and many, many others. Somehow, though, he never quite got around to making a record until the last months of his life, when we went through his old tapes, culling the best versions of favorite pieces, and he recorded a handful of beautiful new cuts. Perry’s playing was most strongly influenced by the quieter, more 'country' blues artists, people like Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotton, Etta Baker, and Sam McGee...Perry was a marvelously soulful, funny, insightful, and imaginative player, and this album gives me great pride and pleasure."

Google Perry Lederman for tidbits. The liner notes to this album were written by Poet Laureate of California, Al Young.

In the family history, Perry died in 1995, seamud came to Joan in 1996, and in 1997 the sale of Perry's Gibson guitar bought Joan's kiln, and every opening of a firing she plays Perry's music.

This book was built from articles written for "Nature," later rearranged by Martin J. Kemp, viewable in contents page if you click again. In the preface he says, "My interest was less in looking at the influence of science on art, or evcen vice versa, but at shared motifs in the imaginative worlds of art and science."

Chapter on ocean sediment glazes is called "Dendrites from the Deep" and is in a chapter called "New Worlds Revealed."

Messages from the Flower Pulpit by Joan Lederman
Messages from the Flower Pulpit by Joan Lederman

Mostly about life cycles, I built this book from 20 gift cards I wrote to myself when I bought flowers. A unique view of dialogue with self and others, changing names and time frames as past and present helped prepare a family for inevitable goodbyes. It's personal and universal. Recommended for all ages.

It's probably fair to say that this book hovers between bizarre and inspirational. Definitely a quick read that can sit unopened or begin to be an oasis to which one goes to drink.

Price includes USPS shipping by Media Mail, 6 to 10 days, select "no shipping needed option for this". If faster service is wanted, request UPS Ground or other options at checkout.
