Indian Ocean Eocene Sediment
Indian Ocean Eocene Sediment

11" x 3.5"

A play with squeezed drips of matte white glaze atop Indian Ocean sediment shows that the sea-mud detoured around the refined glaze. The foram shells were dated by visual inspection and estimated to have lived 35 million years ago.

Says, "Mixed layers of seafloor muds (melted) from north, south, east and west ALL". A great example of the effects of heat on sediments and the "black ice" looking area in the center is where extra sediment flowed and accumulated, almost a window into what Earth does where sediment 'recycles' into the deeper layers. Lavender glaze on rim assembled from refined materials -- keep clicking to look at the details.

Interior bowl is heavily applied sediment from off the the west African coast, thanks to R/V Melville, one of the first sediments given to me because of some imploded cores. Rim is rock slurry squeezed into a thick pile that contracted and metamorphosed into brick-like shapes. Coordinates written clearly on the back, where copper green-blue glaze assembled from refined materials frames calligraphy.

Band of speckled warm-white on interior and exterior is Namibian rock that is evidence that Earth was fully glaciated about 700 million years ago. Red Sea is in the brown shiny glaze, lip of Galapagos and the chatter pattern is Mid-Atlantic Ridge rock slurry. Two fish in center, carved as a stamp by Alan Steinbach.

Interior is mappbable -- click for bigger images to read coordinates. Rim is rock slurry from Earth's crust that was heavily applied when wet and later contracted and metamorphosed in the kiln into brick shapes (I did not make the brick shapes). Not literally, but figuratively speaking this piece is covered with Earth crust slurry from Mid-Atlantic Ridge which, on porcelain, can be a bit sheer where thin and as it's thicker it's more metallic looking. A groove of clear sea-glass fractured and glistens in contrast to the other glazes. The center is "All".

Central fish are framed by a self-organized pile of Earth crust slurry from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that contracted (during drying and then firing) into these brick shapes. Click for bigger image and read that each section's origin is named on the rim.

Back says: anoxic seasonal blooms (Black Sea), upwelling magma (Mid-Atlantic Ridge surrounding center), opalescent spheres (Bering Sea), methane hydrates (exterior from Hydrate Ridge off Oregon), carbonates (Indian and Atlantic Oceans) hot-vent metallics (Galapagos and Red Sea).

The Dark Cemetary ~ Ocean as Womb and Tomb
The Dark Cemetary ~ Ocean as Womb and Tomb

13" x 2.75"

Of all sediment samples I've tried, the sediment on this rim is close to my favorite because it has a matte brown leathery look that allows each foram to suspend in it and speckle yellow from its shell that gives me goose-bumps while I reflect on the vitality that once emanated from the shell's pores. An odd kind of friendship, I know. And about the same time I was experiencing this life-changing transition, I saw an article in the New York Times about the ocean being a "womb and tomb". These vast cycles of space and time are a comfort to my sense that contemporary life is chaotic.

Not a bowl you appreciate for dramatic color! Interior sediment from Brazil Margin, rim from Ceara Rise, west of Africa.
