Branches and Root Balls

11" x 1.75"

Atlantic and Pacific from Monterey Bay and Emerald Basin (off Nova Scotia), sediments alternate in stripes. The lucky part is how the Emerald Basin sediment formed rivulets and then beaded up in a circular band of pooled glaze. Seaglass center.

Mud Patch & Sea Glass (WARP)

11" x 1.25"

The sandy sediment from south of Martha's Vineyard was applied and scraped off quickly with a wooded tool, leaving evidence of thick and thin glaze. Keep clicking to see largest image of side view that shows the warp. It's not too noticeable when the plate sits vertically on a stand or against a wall.

Mappable Bermuda Rise on Stoneware

9" x 2" x 2"

Top half is the Bermuda Rise sediment that branches and flows into lavender (assembled from refined materials). Sometimes small golden speckles highlight the foraminifera shells in the sediment. The torque of the de-airing machine I use to prepare clay sometimes shows up after firing with slight out-of-plumbness.

Mappable Bermuda Rise & Eel Grass

15.25" x 7.25" x 1.75"

Center, under eel grass residue, are Bermuda Rise coordinates -- the sediment glaze that ends were dipped in before side-dips of lavender glaze (assembled from refined materials).

Two effects of the eel grass remain: ash resideu in glossy lines and salt blush where vaporized salt interacted with silica in the iron-rich clay body and left orange sheen. I read that as an aura of where seaweed once was.

Lavender glaze assembled from refined materials.

Earth Crust & Sea Glass
Earth Crust & Sea Glass

1.75" x 1.75"

On porcelain (that has a great high-fired sound) is Earth crust slurry from the Kane Fracture Zone on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, with a well of sea glass. The blue and turquoise have clear sea glass mixed in -- but color intensity comes from Christina's wine bottles, and marbles from --- a STORE! Yes, Joan is not ALWAYS a purist. People love the color. Cpomes with a nice wool felt bag and drawstring plus a printout describing the geological deposit written by the researcher who gave me the rock slurry.

Use as you wish -- this clay is strong.
