Magma Makes Pumice and Basalt

No surprise to geologists, but to me, a wonder! The difference between light-weight crystalline pumice-mud (the silica-rich glassy glaze) and basalty rock-slurry with its versatility as a glaze has been the delightful finale to my investigations with new materials.

Magma Spewings of Basalt & Pumice

10" x 1.75"

My experience is of gleeful contrasts that we get this window into the forces of earth's molten material being metamorphosed into such contrasting forms. Mid-Atlantic Ridge rock is the basalty form and Havre volcanic pumice-mud is the silica-rich form. The rock slurry from Kane Fracture Zone is on the chattered pattern interior and back. Warm speckled areas are Havre mud.

The biggest submarine volcanic eruption known is Havre volcano. The deepest part of the world's oceans in the western Pacific is known as Mariana Trench -- it's about 1,580 miles long with an average width of 43 miles. It reaches a maximum-known depth of 36,070 feet at a small slot-shaped valley in its floor known as the Challenger Deep. The brown band surrounding the center on this bowl is from the Challenger Deep.

On porcelain from center outward, Havre pumice/mud, Mariana Trench, crushed blue seaglass, written provenance, Mid-Atlantic Ridge rock slurry, and more Havre volcano-mud.

Note that porcelain mugs are $20 more each than stoneware. Stoneware and porcelain cups are priced differently because stoneware is easier to work with and the translucency of porcelain also makes deformations (some are favorable, some are losses).

EVIDENCE: Ceramics from Earth's Kiln and Mine
EVIDENCE: Ceramics from Earth's Kiln and Mine

Some WOW stuff came from the kiln over twenty years of melting muds and rocks. Some I photographed and have assembled into a set of twelve cards you can see as thumbnails and a slideshow here. Cards are blank inside EXCEPT a thirteenth with a LEGEND inside -- it refers to numbers on each card.

NOTE about shipping: $7.50 is the cost of one in a Flat Rate USPS box but website only calculates UPS. If you need shipping, I'll subtract the difference between $7.50 and the UPS charge so you'll pay the lower cost. If you're buying multiple boxes, I'll probably use UPS; if in doubt, contact me.
