Two fish in the center are surrounded by melted slurry from drillings into the mid-Atlantic Ridge at the Kane Fracture Zone. Click for bigger image to read names of places that each sediment sample is from.
Back area of brown is from a place where a seismometer was lost and three ships in the area searched the seafloor for it -- one was a physicist who knew of my work and when the tool came up he kept the scrapings. It's from Hydrate Ridge, off the coast of Oregon.
Other glazes used are matte lavender and copper green.

Center is NOAA symbol framed by drillings into mid-Atlantic Ridge at Kane Fracture Zone. Sediments named are glazes on stoneware clay, and represent research done using seven ships, which are named on the back.
White and green matte glazes, and copper green center are assembled from refined materials.

Good magic happened on this one . . . I occasionally try being looser with the sections of different sediments but it never worked well, until this one. Click for larger image to see better. From North Atlantic, Antarctica, Dead Sea, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, Pacific, and Black Sea. There are two holes in the foot that can enable the piece to hang on a wall.
The orangey areas between sediments is from a rutile slip. Other glazes are green matte and copper shiny glaze, both assembled from refined materials.
